This example of the French Bibi Bonnet was the height of fashion in the early 1800's. It's popularity spread all over Europe and the States, and continued with variation until the end of the century. The vertical rise of the crown was designed to accomodate the hairstyle of the day, the Apollo's knot, which sat high atop the head. This is a perfect example of the design law, that form follows function.
