The Cyberathlete Professional League (CPL) was the pioneer and a world leader in professional videogame tournaments, and for ten years has been a major force in the transformation of videogame competitions to a professional sport. Since its founding in 1997, the Dallas-based organization has hosted 60 international main events with a total attendance of over 300,000 gamers, has sanctioned over 500 international qualifiers and awarded more than $3 million in prizes. The CPL Winter and CPL Summer Counter-Strike tournaments were considered part of the Counter-Strike Majors from 2001 to 2006.
